One of the unique things about Acton Academy is that learners have the ability to change things in their studio.
THEY can suggest different ways to do things and then vote to implement a change (assuming it increases excellence).
Learn From Other Acton Academy Schools
So, one of the opportunities of an exchange with another Acton is the ability to learn from their studios. How do they do things? What do they do better than we do? What could we learn from them to increase excellence in our studio? What makes their studio fun?
Then it will be up to our learners to debrief and decide if there are things they would like to change. Not many schools allow the opportunity for learners to make changes about their day.
Our Learners Have Great Ideas
In fact, I went to a public high school, and one year, the administration changed the structure of the day. We, as students, were frustrated with the change, and the administration would not even hear our thoughts; ultimately, we had a walk-out to ask them to hear us out.
At Acton we believe that our learners have great ideas. We listen to them. We let them try things. And we trust their ability to own their education…after all it is THEIR education!
In addition they now have an expanded network of peers that they can all use for getting peer reviews and critiques to continuously work toward improvement.
